Women of Madibogopane

1993, Artist’s book

After the field diaries, the plates became more materially dimensional towards collograph plates. I introduced grass and seeds as well as sand, to try to capture the grit and resilience of the rural communities, especially of the women I visited. Women of Madibogopane, near Taung in the North West represented how “Women hold the knife at the sharp end”. This series may have been my first representation of the sunflowers as women mourning or in prayer - a constant metaphor in my work.
